As a Ghostwriter, I use a 3-Step Process to Pen Your Memoir

You're probably wondering what exactly you're getting yourself into when you decide to work with a ghostwriter.
It is actually a very simple process where most of your involvement comes from being interviewed. In an interview, you can feel free to talk about all the story elements that have been on your mind. Then, when you run out of ideas, I'll start asking questions. For subsequent interviews, I'll email you some questions ahead of time, so that you can give it some thought and be ready.
Different ghostwriters work in different ways, so let me tell you how I do it; it's a simple, three-part process.

Part One:

  • Your book begins with a series of in-person interviews. You'll discuss the material you want the book to encompass, and I'll ask relevant questions. I'll record the interviews, have them transcribed, and use that to begin fleshing out an outline for the work.
  • Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue with as many interviews as necessary (by telephone or skype) to get the bulk of the story across.
  • At the end of two weeks, I'll send you a "pitch" for the book, which is a paragraph describing the story we have discussed in such a way that an agent, publisher, reader, or book-buyer would feel irresistibly compelled to read it. I'll also send you an outline of the story and an initial chapter.
  • This is the time to offer any input as far as reworking the style. I will work to get that initial chapter and outline to your satisfaction, then we will continue to part two.

Part Two:

  • While I write the book, you don't have to do anything. I'll check in with you, at least weekly, to let you know how it is going and to ask ongoing questions. All you have to do is answer my questions and, at your leisure, read the chapters I send you. At the end of part two, I'll send you a first draft.
  • During part two, you and I will go through a 5-part editing process where, together, we edit for accuracy, style, plot, character development, veracity, and more. You will give me any comments you have on the work, and I will ask specific questions about your preferences.

Part Three:

  • I work with a professional editor, so that I always have a second set of eyes reading the manuscript and pointing out any places where the story may need to be strengthened. This means that when you receive your book, memoir, or other piece of personal narrative writing, it is professionally written and edited and ready to be read by agents and publishers.
  • Once the book is complete, I'll do a final edit, and it's yours!
