What is Your Memoir Really About?

A memoir differs from an autobiography in that it tends not to cover your entire life story. A memoir tends to focus on a certain period or significant event in your life. This is why many individuals end up writing numerous memoirs about their adventures, romances, and lessons learned. As your ghostwriter I can help you select the parts of your story--including flashbacks, descriptions of other characters, small but significant moments, and dramatic events-- that are important for telling the tale you have in mind.

I have ghostwritten or edited more than ten books in the last four years, so let me help you hone down the story of your life into a poignant, powerful, and focused memoir. My first task will be to find the meat of your story. In addition to listening to the tale you have to tell, I'll ask questions such as these:

  • What were the pivotal moments?
  • What relationships have affected you most?
  • What caused the most conflict for you?
  • Which events changed your life or way of thinking?
  • How are you most misunderstood by others?
  • Which events do you remember with great emotion?
  • What moments are memorable for unknown reasons?

Through this process, we'll discover the central story of your memoir. Perhaps it's a great love story. Perhaps it's a rags-to-riches tale. It could be a swashbuckling adventure, an exploration of small town life, or any other type of memoir. It all depends upon your life story and what forces shaped you into the person you are now. A ghostwriter works with the clay of your life experiences—selecting the telling moments, leaving out the boring stuff, plumbing deeply for meaning, and working it all into a can’t-put-it-down book with your name proudly splashed across the cover.
